Making Tax Digital FAQ
What is Making Tax Digital for Income Tax?
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is HMRC’s new system for reporting income if you’re self-employed or earn income from property.
Instead of submitting a single annual Self Assessment tax return, you’ll keep digital records and send regular updates to HMRC using compatible software. [gov.uk]
Will Making Tax Digital affect me?
It will depend on your income and circumstances.
From April 2026, it applies to individuals with self-employment or property income over £50,000, with further thresholds introduced over time. [gov.uk]
If you’re unsure whether this affects you, we can help you work that out.
How does it change the way I submit my tax return?
Instead of doing everything once a year, you’ll:
-
Keep digital records of your income and expenses
-
Send quarterly updates to HMRC through software
-
Submit a final year-end declaration
This spreads the work across the year, rather than everything being done in one go.
Do I have to pay tax four times a year?
No.
You’ll still pay your tax by the usual deadlines, but you’ll send updates throughout the year so you have a clearer view of what you owe.
Do I need new software?
Yes, you’ll need software that is compatible with Making Tax Digital.
We can guide you on the right setup and make sure everything is working properly for you.
How can you help with Making Tax Digital?
We make sure everything is set up correctly, your records are kept up to date, and your submissions are handled properly.
So you can stay compliant without needing to figure out the detail yourself.
